Article 17: Right to own Property

500 x 500mm woodcut 607 x 428mm paper size

Artist Statement: Vedant Nanackhand
"The print celebrates the inalienable right of individuals, especially women, to enjoy the freedom to own property. Ownership of property comes with responsibility and this necessitates the right to adequate protection of property from extreme forms of human behaviour.
With regard to property, the print also questions social distinctions based on class and reflects ambiguously on the element of criminality in society as well as the extreme measure to which this right to protection of property is exercised. The image also reflects on the right of ownership relating to intellectual property which in some countries, is being steadily eroded as governments attempt to control freedom of expression, to it’s advantage.
Within the context of the International Print Portfolio, lies the fact that the graphic medium is truly democratic means of expressing the spirit and values intrinsic to the philosophy of the UDHR as these transcend all barriers of race, culture and class."
